Wines in Romantic Germany - The Rhineland-Palatinate

23rd April 2012 Print

Rhineland-Palatinate is Germany's number one wine-producing region. (Around 70 percent of all German wine is produced here) Its mild, sunny climate and nutrient-rich soils are perfectly suited for growing grapes. The six wine regions of the Moselle, Middle Rhine, Ahr, Nahe, Palatinate and Rheinhessen,- which includes the only German "Great Wine Capital", Mainz - encompass the full range of German wines.Viticulture was brought to Rhineland-Palatinate by the Romans over 2,000 years ago and nowadays attracts wine lovers and connoisseurs more than ever.

Wine festivals
The wine festivals in the regions around Rhine and Moselle are a pure pleasure, as diverse as the grapes that are grown and pressed here. Streets, lanes and squares are decorated, garlands of leaves and coloured ribbons bedeck the wine stalls. The air is full of music and the scent of wine. Often, there are colourful processions through the villages to celebrate the pleasure of wine and its traditions. Wine festivals may culminate in the crowning of wine princesses, queens or even Bacchus, the god of wine.

Wine and culture
The cultural destiny of Rhineland-Palatinate was sealed when the Roman civilisation of antiquity took root here all those centuries ago. In the Wine Land Rhineland-Palatinate, you'll discover over 500 castles and palaces, countless Roman buildings, the former Roman Limes border wall, the UNESCO World Heritage Middle Rhine Valley with the famous Loreley rock, and the cathedrals in the World Heritage towns of Trier and Speyer, and in Mainz and Worms.
