Cottage Lodge, the 15-room, 5-star, multi-award winning, ‘boutique’ B&B in the heart of the New Forest, has created the UK’s first ‘driftwood’ bed, constructed entirely from a New Forest Ash tree.

The bed, which can only be described as a work of art, was created by furniture wood sculptor Rob Dyer who lives locally in the New Forest.

Comments Rob: “All the wood that I use for creating my unique, bespoke furniture is effectively ‘rescued’ from trees that have been cut up for firewood.

“The bed was created from a local Ash tree, which I had to air-dry for four years before starting work. I worked in stages but all in all it took me about a week to finish.”

Christina Simons who owns Cottage Lodge said: “the king-sized ‘driftwood bed’ – as it has become known – is not the only furniture in the Rhinefield Room that is made from the Ash tree. The bedside table, table and wardrobe were also made from the ‘rescued wood’. Rob is a true artist and produces wonderful furniture.

“I like to think of it as bringing the forest into the property; everyone who sleeps in the bed comments about having had a great night’s sleep.”

Stays in the Rhinefield Room at Cottage Lodge cost from £47.50 pp (two sharing, B&B).

During the month of June, Cottage Lodge is offering five-night stays for the price of four, Sunday-Thursday, from £150 pp (2 sharing). The deal also includes a ‘Bucks Fizz Breakfast’ one morning, served in bed!

The ingredients for the famous Cottage Lodge, full-English breakfast, are all sourced in the New Forest or wider Hampshire area.
