Backpackers reckless with contents of their bags

17th July 2012 Print

More than half (54%) of travellers carry contents worth over £500 in their backpacks but few take out travel insurance to protect them in the event of loss.

60%of those surveyed admitted they don’t bother with travel insurance with the majority claiming it was a waste of money.

This is according to a survey of 505 people by Generator Hostels, Europe’s fastest growing hostel chain.

Luckily, the majority of those questioned have not experienced the theft of their belongings. Of those questioned, only one in five had their belongings stolen and the total value was typically under £50.

Those surveyed said that the item that they would miss the most was their passport (27%) with mobile phones coming in a close second (24%).

“With thousands of students about to head off travelling for the summer, we wanted to highlight how valuable the contents of some travellers backpacks are and how they should take actions to keep their valuables safe,” said Julia Luker at Generator Hostels

“We understand why some people may not choose to take out travel insurance when going away, and with this in mind we have created a number of guidelines to help travellers ‘stay safe’ this summer and ensure that their belongings are secure.”
