Orders soar for BBC Olympics DVD and Closing Ceremony acts
Over the final weekend of the London 2012 Olympic Games, Amazon.co.uk saw pre-orders for the BBC’s highlights review DVD and Blu-ray increase by 1300% on Saturday alone, before the closing ceremony even aired.
“Winning 29 gold medals is something that every Team GB fan will be happy to watch time and time again,” said John Boumphrey, Music, DVD and MP3 Director at Amazon.co.uk Ltd. “Summer 2012 was the year that the Olympics came to London, propelling the likes of Jessica Ennis, Nicola Adams and Mo Farah to national heroes, and many people will want to revisit that for many years to come.”
The identities of the acts performing were a closely guarded secret ahead of the ceremony but as performers past and present took to the stage there were immediate uplifts in orders for products by many of them at Amazon.co.uk:
Downloads of Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up That Hill’ MP3 track increased by 35 times overnight.
Elbow‘s performance also benefited them, with sales of albums ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’ and ‘Build a Rocket Boys!’ increasing by 30 times.
Emeli Sande’s two performances saw sales of her album ‘Our Version of Events’ increase by 650%.
‘A Symphony Of British Music - Music For The Closing Ceremony Of The London 2012 Olympic Games’ will be released on 20 August and is already climbing high in the charts with an 874% increase in pre-orders on Sunday.
It wasn’t just music which experienced an increase in sales at Amazon.co.uk, Monty Python got in on the act as Eric Idle’s performance of ‘Always Look on the Bright Side of Life’ triggered uplifts of 1,333% for ‘The Life of Brian’ and 367% for ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’.
