Trends first made popular by 1970s crime series Hawaii Five-0 are dominating men’s fashion this summer, thanks to young fans of bright prints who weren’t even born when the first series was broadcast.

Hawaiian print shorts and garish shirts are flying off the shelves at Debenhams and into suitcases, with the retailer reporting sales up by a scorching 160%.

British men are snapping up the tropical slim fit shirts and garish swim shorts that the show is most famous for, and for the full Hawaii Five-0 effect they may even start using the renowned catch phrase, ‘book ‘em Danno’.

“Men are going totally tropical this summer and are losing all inhibitions when it comes to their holiday wardrobes,” says Debenhams Menswear Buying Director, Paul Baldwin.

The trend has been put down to months of hard work in a tough climate, as men are jetting off for their summer holidays and letting their hair down by opting for bright, colourful clothes.

Baldwin continues; “Once the summer holiday starts, the suit is thrown to the back of the wardrobe and men are reaching for garish prints to really show their true colours.”

Debenhams’ personal shoppers have been advising men on how to pull off the ‘Hawaii five-0’ trend without looking like another famous tropical print lover, Timmy Mallet.

Top tips include:

1. Not clashing too many different prints.
2. Mixing printed shirts with denim and chinos in neutral colours.
3. Go for slim-fit, tailored shirts over baggy styles.

Celebrities seen wearing the look in the right way include; One Direction, David Beckham and Johnny Depp.

Debenhams’ Hawaiian print shirts are available in all stores nationwide and on Debenhams.com, prices start at £27.50.
