Rare chance to own a piece of Kidderminster history

The Briars

Approaching via the sweeping driveway the beauty and grandeur of The Briars is clear to see.

Built circa 1870 and once home to the mayor of Kidderminster, it’s had a long and varied history, having more recently operated as hotel. The impressive period property has now been lovingly restored by Elan Homes to give it a new lease of life.

Externally the traditional architecture and character of the building have been retained, while the interior has been enhanced to meet the demands of modern living to create a unique family home that combines the best of old and new.

Marie Morris, sales director for Elan Homes in the North, says: “When we purchased The Briars it had fallen into disrepair but considering its age the property was in a reasonable condition and we could see that with some care and attention it could once again be an elegant family home. It truly is a beautiful building and such is the property’s architectural and historic significance that the local authority included it in the local heritage list.”

A Masonic lodge, which was in a 1960s extension, has been demolished and the rest of the building stripped back to the original walls throughout.

Step inside The Briars and from the grand reception hallway the spacious nature of the five-bedroom home is clearly evident.

With more than 3,000 square feet of accommodation including three reception rooms and an expansive 28’ x 26’ kitchen, dining and family room, it’s a versatile property with rooms that can be adapted for a myriad of uses.

For example the library and games room could be utilised as a play room for young children, a cinema room for teenagers or even a home gym.

“While we’ve retained the traditional bay window and feature fire place in the drawing room, we set out to create a home that’s designed very much with modern family living in mind,” Marie explains.

“For a property of its size and age The Briars has a light and airy feel, which is emphasised by four sets of French doors that offer lots of natural light and easy access out onto the landscaped grounds.

“The open plan kitchen, dining area and family room has doors leading outside from either end of this sociable living space. It’s great for those with young families as children can be supervised playing on the timber decking while mum or dad are cooking.”

The kitchen is well equipped with high quality oak units, granite work surfaces and integrated appliances including microwave, oven, dishwasher and fridge freezer; while the utility provides a dedicated space for the washer and dryer.

Upstairs, the master bedroom and bedroom two each boast en-suites with the added glamour of dressing rooms, with the remaining three bedrooms sharing the family bathroom.

The Briars is on the market at £499,995.
