This year’s Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) Awareness Week takes place from 22nd – 30th September, focussing on the areas of prevention and early detection.

To raise awareness of AMD, Bausch + Lomb has teamed up with the Macular Disease Society and Amateur Photographer magazine to launch ‘The Joy of Sight’ photography competition offering the chance to win a Nikon D3100 SLR Pro Kit from iGadjit Cameras.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a serious degenerative condition of the eyes. 608,213 people were estimated to have AMD in the UK in 2010 – 513,300 cases are believed to be late stage - and it is the most common cause of registrations for blindness or partial sight the UK.

AMD affects the macula, the part of the eye that allows a person to see fine detail and gradually destroys the sharp, central vision, which is needed for seeing objects clearly, and for common daily tasks such as reading and driving .

To be in with a chance to win, photographs are to be uploaded at joyofsightcomp.co.uk. Once uploaded, there is an opportunity to see a simulation of the devastating effects of AMD. The winning image will best encapsulate what sight means to people and capturing the joy it brings.
