Ohlins releases Nissan R35 GT-R Road and Track kit
Respected all around the world for its high-end suspension, Öhlins has released a sublimely engineered suspension upgrade for this decade’s supercar bargain; Nissan’s insanely capable R35 GT-R. Recognising the compromises inherent within the original design, the Swedish manufacturer has created a hugely effective and beautifully constructed solution that offers a whole new level of quality, adjustment and control, with genuine everyday usability and comfort.
Keen to maintain the car’s ‘real world’ qualities, the Öhlins kit has been designed from a clean sheet of paper and features many innovative and unique features. The front is based around a cold-wound 160 N/mm spring configuration, with the rear being at 90 N/mm to provide the perfect balance of reduction in body roll and weight transfer, without overly inducing harshness into the car’s demeanour. The build quality of the Road and Track kit is exceptional, with carbon-steel bodies and flawlessly anodised detailing. Öhlins’ pioneering dual-flow valve technology means that despite their light weight and slim-line profile, the track kit responds exceptionally well to road undulations. The use of needle valves in the damping unit also means that even when the oil becomes hot after a hard session on the circuit or ‘B’ road, the damping rate is kept absolutely consistent, even when the viscosity of the damping fluid changes.
The Öhlins units also fit precisely as per OE, too. Bolting directly onto factory mounting points, with brake-line and sensor mounting points retained in their original positions. Both front and rear use a single bleed adjuster with full spring preload adjustment. All factory mounts are faithfully replicated in precision-machined aluminium and the units feature length adjustment, which is already pre-set some 10mm lower than standard, offering a wide range of ride heights and stances for road and track work. Full dustcovers are included as part of the standard specification, as are precision-machined aluminium top mounts.
Height adjustment is achieved by simple adjustment of the precision-machined threaded body and damping and rebound are tweaked simultaneously in one simple twist of the easily accessible knurled knob; allowing the supermarket run to be clicked off with limo-style smoothness and after a few seconds of adjustment, track days to be dispatched with racecar precision.
