Karl’s productive FH allows for inflation on the move

According to Karl Jones, attention to detail when choosing the specification of the latest Volvo FH tractor unit to join the family business of Karl Jones and Son Haulage Ltd has brought major productivity benefits.

Operating from a base in Tir-Y-Berth near Bargoed in South Wales the double-drive Volvo logging tractor incorporates an innovative Central Tyre Inflation System (CTIS).

CTIS is used to improve traction off-road by lowering drive-axle tyre pressures. This can be done on the move, says Karl, thus saving time and enhancing productivity.

Karl, who also drives the FH, claims that the combination of double drive, CTIS and the I-Shift automated gearbox’s optional off-road software, ensures that the vehicle is able to keep moving and cross terrain that is simply ‘out of bounds’ to other forestry trucks.

In addition, Karl reports that the superb comfort of the cab and the ride, as provided by the air-suspended axles, ‘takes all the hard work out of driving.’

Supplied by Truck and Bus Wales & West, Karl’s FH is powered by a 13-litre diesel rated at 540hp. Unusually, this latest Volvo FH tractor unit, is equipped with a day cab rather than the customary sleeper or Globetrotter.

The extra space behind the shorter cab, allows for the installation of a fully-enclosed cabin on the Palfinger Epsilon 01702 chassis-mounted log loader. Occasional nights out are still possible, says Karl, as the day cab is fitted with a fold-down bunk.

The FH is usually coupled to either a Robinson or Dennison specialist, timber spec, tri-axle semi-trailer. Operating throughout the whole of the UK the vehicle is used to haul softwood and also telegraph poles.

“Specifying a logging tractor is a complicated and time-consuming business; but all our suppliers went that extra mile to make sure we ended up with exactly what we needed,” said Karl. “We will be taking delivery of a new Robinson trailer very soon and am delighted to say that we are already working on the specification of our next Volvo tractor unit. I can only hope that it will be as fantastic as this one,” he concluded.
