Given the winter weather in the UK, combined with ever growing hours sat at desks and in front of TVs it’s not surprising. Vitamin D is also known as the ‘sunshine vitamin’ and is generated largely by exposure to sunlight, with the remainder coming from our diets. The vitamin helps boost the immune system and serious deficiencies in it are linked to conditions ranging from rickets to S.A.D. (seasonal effective disorder).
A survey recently found however that 77% of adults spend most of their time indoors however and that one in nine people are now deficient in the vitamin. There have also been reports of a worrying increase of conditions in children related to low vitamin D levels, such as rickets.
