Whether on a first date or at an interview, 55 per cent of communication occurs without words, so your body language and the signs you give off can make a vital lasting impression. The most expressive part of our body is the eyes, according to body language expert Elizabeth Kuhnke. “Eyes are the first thing a person notices when they meet you, and are the focal point during conversation.” Here Elizabeth offers some expert insights that may make you think differently about everyday eye behaviour. Your eyes can be deceiving...

Problem: Watery eyes

“Watery eyes are associated with sadness, so people could think that you’ve been crying or are about to cry, giving off the impression that you are overly emotional.”

Real Reason: Watery eyes can be a symptom of conjunctivitis, irritation or dry eye.

Problem: Red eyes

People associate red eyes with a lack of sleep, excessive alcohol consumption and even drug use! So you could be giving off the impression that you’ve been up all night in the pub.”

Real Reason: Red eyes can be a symptom of conjunctivitis, cold, irritation or allergy.

Problem: Over blinking

“Excessive blinking is associated with nervousness, so people might think that you are much more anxious than you really are.”

Real Reason: Over-blinking can be a symptom of irritated or dry eyes.

Problem: Squinting

“We are immediately sceptical of a person who keeps their eyes very narrow, so by squinting people are less likely to trust you, and might even think that you are lying.”

Real Reason: Squinting can be a symptom of irritated, sensitive eyes.

Problem: Wandering eyes

“If your eyes are constantly wandering around and not maintaining contact, people will assume that you are bored and not listening to what they are saying.”

Real Reason: If you are embarrassed about the look of your eyes, you are unlikely to want to maintain eye contact!

Problem: Staring eyes

“Staring eyes are perceived to be scary or intense, and may even give off the impression that you are a bit strange!”
Real Reason: Relaxing your muscles relieves sore eyes, but results in a vacant staring appearance.

Problem: Wriggling eyebrows

“When we see wriggling eyebrows, we are immediately reminded of an evil cartoon character, so as well as looking humorous, it can also be perceived as odd.”

Real Reason: Wriggling your eyebrows is done in an attempt to itch or soothe irritated eyes.

Problem: Twitching eyes

“Twitching eyes give off the impression that you are lying, or even trying to wink, so can be perceived as suspicious or flirtatious.”

Real Reason: Twitching eyes can be a symptom of contact lens irritation.

For all of the above problems, Murine offers a solution in the form of a range of eye drops and mists to soothe the uncomfortable symptoms and prevent the potential misconceptions! Suitable for use with or without contact lenses. Available from pharmacies and supermarkets nationwide. Visit murine.co.uk for further information.
