The fact is that since 2003, it has been illegal for drivers to talk on a handheld phone but the penalty is about to get a great deal harsher. From February 27 drivers caught using a handheld mobile phone not only face an increased fine of £60, but will automatically incur three penalty points on their licence, potentially leading to disqualification and increased insurance premiums.
