Flu Monday: Cold cases peak following February ‘retox’

Today is 'Flu Monday' with higher than usual cold cases expected, following February ‘retoxing’ and increased socialising over the Valentine’s Day weekend, according to new predictions from Kleenex Balsam.

Following a month of hibernation at the start of the year and, despite the good intentions of our January detox where a quarter of us cut back on outings to pubs, clubs and bars, it seems the February ‘retox’ is well and truly underway: one in five of us are already back on the social scene, according to new research of 2007 Brits from the UK’s leading facial tissue brand.

Although we’re raring to get out and about, excess socialising not only leaves our bodies run down but puts us at higher risk of coming into contact with cold germs. With Valentine’s Day weekend being the first social event of the 2013 calendar, the increased number of people that went out to celebrate is expected to trigger an increased number of cold sufferers today, following the average two day incubation period for the common cold.

Other habits, that we cut back on in January, have also been resurrected: 71% of the nation attempted a post-Christmas detox, including giving up smoking, drinking less and eating a healthier diet, yet 50% have already admitted to reverting back to these.

After a month of being health conscious, this behaviour can be a ‘shock to our system’.

GP Dr Rob Hicks comments: “For health (and often financial) reasons we tend to cut back in January, socialising less, and pursuing health drives such as eating healthily, giving our bodies a chance to recuperate after the over indulgence of Christmas. When the month’s over, many start socialising once more. Around Valentine’s Day in particular, with more socialising comes closer contact with others, which is when germs can spread easily through coughing, sneezing, and physical contact. This is why it’s important to cover the mouth and nose with a disposable tissue when coughing and sneezing and to wash your hands often.

More socialising, combined with less healthy habits that may re-emerge following a January detox, is a recipe for illness. If you’re feeling under the weather, it’s best to rest at home, drink plenty of fluids and eat a balanced diet to build up your strength and allow your body to recover.”

Infused with a protective balm containing calendula, Kleenex Balsam tissues help to soothe the nose, preventing it from becoming sore and red when you have a cold. The range includes Balsam, Balsam Fresh and Nose and Lip Balm. For more information visit facebook.com/KleenexUK.
