Alternatives to a Las Vegas holiday

5th March 2013 Print

If you can’t go to Las Vegas for that gambling/party holiday you planned with your partner or your friends, because of visa issues or inadequate funds, don’t fear.

Of course, there’s probably not much that can replicate the sensation of driving down the strip in Las Vegas, but there definitely are alternative destinations that you can go to for all of your gambling needs, if that’s why you were dreaming of a jaunt to Vegas.

This article lists some of the other places you can travel to for some real-life gambling fun. Remember though, if you can’t afford to travel at all, you can always gamble online. Just check out sites like www.grosvenorcasinos.com/Casino/TableGames.

London, England

People are inclined not to think of London as a ‘gambler’s city’, but is very much a place to go to for some prime-time gambling. Though it’s true that the weather is rarely anything to shout about (it is indeed mostly terrible), who on earth expects to gamble outdoors?

There are loads of casinos in London, and a lot of them have world-class gambling facilities. The English definitely have a thing for gambling, whether it’s bingo or high-stakes poker, so their casinos are adequately armed to the teeth.

London is, of course, a great city to spend some time in, particularly if you’ve got some winnings to splash.

Atlantic City

This famous New Jersey resort city remains strong in the public imagination owing to cultural artefacts like the 1980 film of the same name and by other classic poker films like Rounders as well as the HBO series Boardwalk Empire. Atlantic City can’t really be compared to Las Vegas, but it is definitely an entity unto itself when it comes to gambling.

This is a great place to go to, especially if you’re already been to Vegas. It has an identity of its own, despite having been unfairly saddled with the unfortunate moniker of ‘Vegas-Lite’.

Sun City, South Africa

Since the 2010 World Cup, South Africa’s development has been boosted by a lot of additional investment, including the availability of places like Sun City.

It’s something like a resort, which means if you get tired of gambling, there’ll be quite a lot of other things to do – you’re in South Africa, after all!

There are two casinos that are open daily, with world-class gambling facilities available, including a cashless card system that accepts most major credit cards. Apart from slot machines, other games offered include blackjack, American roulette, poker and punto banco.

If you’re travelling with first-time gamblers, there’s also a Sun City School of Gaming that teaches newcomers the rules and etiquette of gambling.
