A premier league performance entertained north east businesses this week as Acropolis played at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland.

Acropolis, the north east entertainment group from Deerness Gymnastics Academy, which last year won the ITV Talent show Let’s Get Gold as an acrobatic quartet, have now developed into an experienced display team, who entertain, enthral and captivate with beautiful gymnastics and stunning choreography.

Their performance at the Stadium of Light completed the North East Better Health at Work Awards which celebrate the achievements of companies from across Sunderland, Gateshead and South Tyneside who have made significant efforts to improve the health of their workforce in 2012.

Booked for the event by organisers Amacus Limited, Christine Hall, MD, Amacus Limited said: “Acropolis were amazing, they really gave our event the wow factor and our guests loved the performance – Amacus are very happy to give them a resounding endorsement! “

The Acropolis performances are founded in the discipline of acrobatic gymnastics, in which members of the quartet are currently British, European and World Champions, including Jesse Heskett from Seaburn.

This appearance at the Stadium of Light follows performances at the BCC Sports Awards, Local Heroes Awards and the MK Dons Stadium in Milton Keynes, as well as sell out Christmas Displays at their home gym club.

"It has been great for the gymnasts and the club to see the fantastic audience reactions to their performances. Over a thousand people have now seen the performance live and we are looking forward to entertaining more over the coming months," said Stuart Thompson, Acropolis coach. "It is a very different prospect to international sporting competition where our gymnasts are experienced in representing Great Britain at the very highest level. But is one that enables us to develop our performances to entertain and literally take the audience's breath away.”

Over the past twenty years Deerness Gymnastics Academy have become one of Britain’s top gymnastics clubs, developing over 100 international gymnasts with more than sixty World and European medallists, including four World and six European Champions in its roll of honour. It is not only one of the most successful clubs in Great Britain but it is also recognised on the International scene as one of the top clubs in the world.

The club took over the running of Deerness Gymnastics Academy in 2011, following the closure of Deerness Leisure Centre and is making gymnastics coaching sessions with world-class coaches available to all ages from novice to elite level. Acropolis are helping to build a future for the club by earning valuable income for the charity.

“As a charitable body and volunteer-led club it is important that we continually look at new ways to introduce additional income streams to keep the gym going,” said Karl Wharton, director of gymnastics, Deerness Gymnastics Academy. “Our aim is to produce happy, healthy confident children and Acropolis are not only doing the club proud by helping us to achieve this aim hopefully for some time to come but also inspiring more children to take up gymnastics.”
