The most common holiday-goers’ complaints revealed

27th March 2013 Print

Going on holiday somewhere shouldn’t be stressful or hectic, but the sad fact is that a lot of holiday-goers often find themselves wishing that they’d never left the house. There’s a lot that can go horribly wrong during a holiday, quite frequently.

Often, things can get so bad that travellers often try to seek holiday compensation from their insurance providers. It’s the least you can expect after your holiday has turned into a nightmare. This article goes over some of the more common complaints that travellers have while on holiday.

No love for the lone traveller

Unfortunately, a lot of tourist accommodation is geared towards couples or people who travel in pairs. This means that if you’re a solo traveller, you stand to lose money by paying more for a double bedroom at your accommodation.

Most holiday packaging is structured in the same way, so if you’re travelling alone, you are probably going to have to do your own research and free-style your holiday instead of going on a tour or a packaged holiday.

Airport blues

A staggering number of complaints from holiday-goers involve unpleasant experiences at airports and flights. Common problems include bad service, baggage misplacement, flight delays with no compensation or assistance and issues with airport transfers and connections.

This is a strong reason you should get travel insurance before you leave, as airport-related misery is very unpredictable.

Travel agency betrayal

If you’ve made it past both airports, the next set of problems is most likely to arise from inaccurate information provided by your travel agent. You may arrive at your accommodation and find that it’s not really what you expected, or how the travel agent described it would be.

The mistakes a travel agent can make are varied, but tend to cause a lot of inconvenience. For instance, your travel agent may have forgotten to let the accommodation know that you were travelling with a baby, leaving you without a cot or bed for the child.

Another grievance is booking tickets for your whole family, but not reserving the seats next to each other, so you are all separated during the flight.

Problems with money

This is another issue that many travellers suffer from. Generally, to avoid currency change commission rates, travellers resort to bringing their own cash. No one really wants to walk around with wads of cash in their pockets, though.

The alternative is to withdraw cash from local ATMs, but this will often result in a hefty foreign transaction fee levied on you.
