2013 is a very special year for many British institutions. For the Royal family, it is the year that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are due to celebrate the birth of their first child. In the field of medicine, the world famous British institution that is the NHS will also celebrate a massive landmark in July, as it marks its 65th birthday. 2013 is also a year of celebration for some of Britain's fashion greats, including none other than popular British shirts to watches brand Ben Sherman, who are celebrating their 50th year as fashion pioneers.

The Ben Sherman brand began back in 1963, with creator Arthur Benjamin Sugarman (who had changed his name to the more American-sounding Ben Sherman) at the helm.  The idea for the brand came from Sherman who was working in his father in law's manufacturing company in the USA. After the ill health of his mother he decided to relocate back to his native Brighton and set up shop in Bedford Square.

1963 saw Beatles record their first album at Abbey Road, but out on the south coast of England, Ben Sherman was about to launch his first shirt. Sherman's inspiration for his clothing line was that of the classic American Ivy League shirt, but the founders' passion and interest in patterns, fabric and colour gave the classic design a modern twist, which became the signature look for the company.

The Ben Sherman brand offered something new to the industry, and the company has since built up a strong heritage. A group of modernists otherwise know as 'Mods' fell in love with the slim fitting, brightly colour shirts, so much so that the Ben Sherman shirt became the staple look for the revolutionary movement. Over the years the look has been adapted through several iconic style movements including;

Teddy Boy
Mods
Rocker
Punk
Skinhead
Two Tone
Northern Soul

Having existed for over five decades, the Ben Sherman brand has extended to accessories too. From cufflinks, to jewellery and watches, the range of products has both adapted and grown through the years.

The Watch Hut is the UK's largest watch website, stocking over 100 popular brands including a stunning collection of Ben Sherman watches that capture the very essence of modernism and classic style. The collection truly represents British style and culture, and in their 50th year the style is still as strong and current as ever.
