A property owner in Droylsden has transformed a dull British back yard into a Mediterranean oasis which would not look out of place in the pages of a home and garden magazine.

The hot weather has seen homeowners up and down the land spending as much of their spare time as they can outdoors and in their garden, and 27 year old Sonya Tonkow and her partner 28 year old Lee have been enjoying the sun at the back of their two bedroom mid terrace between the centre of Droylsden and Littlemoss.

“We would like to claim all the credit but most of the work was done by my Dad,” said Sonya. “He is really creative and enjoys developing lovely spaces.”

Sonya’s dad Steve says you don’t need a lot of money or even skill to replicate his work. Steve first rendered the walls and painted them white. The floor was re-flagged using an old fashioned stone. Terracotta Spanish pots and plates have been placed around the wall, while at the back of the courtyard there is an ornamental water feature and a barbecue with terracotta wall tiles overhanging it. Add in fairy lights, a few well-chosen plants and some garden furniture and the look is complete.

Gemma Bailey from Sanderson James said: “This is a really great example of what you can do with a small space. Our buyers are increasingly looking at any outside space as another room and so a nice garden or a clever courtyard like this can make or break a sale.”

The property is not overlooked and there is hardly any traffic noise and so when Sonya and Lee are entertaining they say it is hard to believe they are in Droylsden.

“We love alfresco dining and we have a lot of barbecues with friends,” she said. “I love to watch people when they come outside for the first time – they are always amazed. It’s been fabulous using the space during the hot weather - and it’s even cosy in the colder months thanks to a patio heater and the walls keeping out the chill. ”

If you want to grab your piece of the Med then this property could be yours as Sonya and Lee are looking for a bigger home and have the property on the market for offers over £95,000 with Sanderson James. To book a viewing visit sandersonjames.co.uk.
