Beware the Ghost Dog of Ross-on Wye this Halloween

The Pilgrim Country House hotel in the Wye valley in Herefordshire – which commands uninterrupted views over the Wales border towards the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains – is home to a very unusual ghost – that of a dog which can sometimes be heard scampering around the hotel and whimpering softly in the middle of the night.

Comments Steve Boyle, former England and British Lions rugby international and co-owner of the hotel: “The hotel was formerly a rectory that was originally built around 1890.

“The dog, which was owned by the rector, is believed to have lived here around 1900 and it had the rather unusual name of San Toy. After it died, it was allegedly buried in the wall in what is now the bar.

“From time to time guests claim to have heard it in the middle of the night, running around and crying softly; perhaps it never got over being parted from its owner and can’t understand where he has gone. It’s rather a sad story really.

“We have some dog-friendly rooms and we have had guests staying whose dogs have simply refused to go into the bar. An organisation called ‘Haunted Hereford’ came in to investigate but couldn't confirm the existence of a ghost – but then again, they couldn’t deny it either.”

The Pilgrim is a perfect location for a romantic break and is also a haven for walkers; the hotel recommends walks for all levels of ability with a choice of hikes from 3-6 hours that start from the hotel reception (maps and notes available).

There are circular walks starting from the front door of the hotel, the famous Wye Valley Walk is a short distance away and the Herefordshire Trail passes within a few feet of the hotel.

The hotel is noted for its Valley Restaurant which serves dishes prepared using local ingredients by classically-trained chef Deepak Kumar (a member of the British Culinary Federation).

There are also excellent meal options available in the bar.

A two-night midweek break in late October (including Halloween) in a Valley View room costs from £69 pp (two sharing on a B&B basis).
