TyreSafe and RoadSafe to highlight dangers of worn tyres

TyreSafe, the UK’s leading tyre safety body and information provider, has become the latest organisation to support the work of RoadSafe – a road safety partnership of leading companies and road safety professionals. TyreSafe, formerly the Tyre Industry Council, has conducted various initiatives with RoadSafe. In 2001 the then TIC gained a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award for its practical work promoting the dangers of driving on defective or badly worn tyres, a contributory factor in many accidents.

According to figures recently released by the Department of Transport, a third of all crashes resulting in injury are as a result of defective or under inflated tyres. RoadSafe and TyreSafe will be working closely together to raise the awareness of the importance of illegal and badly worn tyres – TyreSafe research has indicated that 12% of cars on the roads in the UK have at least one tyre below the 1.6mm legal minimum tread depth, a further 12% have at least one badly worn tyre – between 1.6mm and 2mm.

TyreSafe will be the experts speaking on behalf of RoadSafe on all tyre safety matters. The two organisations will be arranging joint initiatives targeting all drivers, punching home the message of the importance of checking tyres regularly and replacing worn tyres before they reach the legal minimum.
