Monarch launch two new ski routes from Birmingham airport

Monarch announces two new routes from Birmingham Airport - to Salzburg and Turin - as part of its winter ski programme for 2014/15. Flights will commence on the 13th December 2014 and are on sale from 10th June 2014.

Salzburg sits on the border between Austria and Germany and is the capital city of the province which bears its name. Salzburg’s excellent position on the motorway network makes it a great stop-off for skiers and snowboarders alike, as it has an abundance of ski resorts within easy reach.

Within the city there are plenty of activities and cultural pursuits on offer; it is Mozart’s birthplace and the backdrop to many scenes from the Sound of Music. As the home of the carol ‘Silent Night’, Salzburg is also ideal for Christmas Market trips. Over Christmas, the city has a festive atmosphere filled with the scent of cinnamon, baked apples and gingerbread.

Turin is the capital of Italy's Piedmont region, in the far north-west of the country. It too is close to the Alps, making it another excellent starting-point for skiing holidays. This cosmopolitan city is a major industrial centre, perhaps most famous as the home of the car manufacturer Fiat. The City is also historically and architecturally fascinating with elegant arcaded streets and dotted with noble equestrian statues of Savoy princes.

Andrew Swaffield, Managing Director of Monarch Airlines comments: “We are delighted to expand our ski programme from Birmingham airport to Salzburg and Turin.

“Salzburg is our first Austrian destination from Birmingham and we are pleased to announce it as one of our new ski routes for the upcoming 2014/15 ski season. Turin is Italy’s gateway to the Alps and now our fifth route flying to Italy.

“We are pleased to be offering all skiers across the UK the opportunity to fly to the popular ski destinations across Europe. Monarch now offers routes to five European airports of interest to skiers throughout the winter from Birmingham, giving our customers variety and the perfect gateway for their winter breaks.”

William Pearson, Birmingham Airport’s Aviation Development Director, added: “The decision by Monarch to add Salzburg and Turin to their ski programme at Birmingham is great news for those who are planning on hitting the slopes this winter.

“We’re confident the introduction of these new routes will prove to be tremendously popular not only with skiers, but also with those who are keen to explore these great cities in more detail, both rich in culture and famous for their breathtaking architecture.”
