Make like Kate and take a solo trip to Malta

28th July 2014 Print

Kensington Palace announced earlier this week that HRH The Duchess of Cambridge will undertake her first solo tour overseas, when she travels to the beautiful Mediterranean island of Malta. Visiting from 20-21 September, Kate will join celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of Malta’s independence from the UK.

Whilst the Duchess’s travel itinerary will undoubtedly be handled on her behalf by a posse of proficient Palace officials, arranging a solo trip to Malta is also a doddle for those of us without the benefits of her royal status. Singles travel specialist, Solos Holidays has over 30 years’ experience in crafting short breaks and longer trips for those wishing to travel on their own, including clients who – like Kate – may have a spouse or partner at home but still crave some well-deserved ‘me time’. These include two tempting options in Malta:

Seven nights’ all-inclusive in Mellieha from £1,489 pp

The picturesque seaside town of Mellieha, on the north of the island, is home to Malta’s largest beaches as well as an array of other attractions. Set just 30 metres from the seafront, the four-star, all-inclusive Seabank Resort & Spa Hotel offers no less than six restaurants plus three bars, a modern spa, fully-equipped gym and two swimming pools.

Enjoy a day’s excursion to Valletta or venture inland to Mdina, the former capital where Roman, medieval, Arabic, Punic, French and British influences combine to create a unique atmosphere. Known as the ‘Silent City’ because of the tranquillity of its narrow, maze-like streets, pottering in Mdina promises lovely surprises around every corner – from Baroque palazzos to haunts that were once home to the feudal lords of the Spanish Crown.

Departing 16 September (coinciding with Kate’s visit) & 23 September 2014, the price is from £1,489 pp including flights (Gatwick), accommodation in a single room, all meals, snacks, local-brand alcohol and soft drinks, daytime activities and evening entertainment, welcome drink & information meeting and the services of an accompanying Solos Tour Leader. Manchester departures from £1,559 pp. Full holiday details here.

Seven nights’ half-board in Sliema from £689 pp

Known for its relaxed ambience, Sliema offers the perfect base from which to explore the island and its capital, Valletta, where colourful museums and theatres - plus cutting-edge modern architecture - nestle amid the chequerboard of atmospheric streets and historic grand palaces.

Your home for the week, the four-star Hotel Fortina enjoys superb sea and harbour views as well as choice of four restaurants, two bars, four swimming pools and several spa & wellness areas, making it tricky at times to tear yourself away. However, with delightful walking trails to explore, delicious fish soup washed down with a glass of Cisk (the local brew) to be sampled and a complimentary harbour cruise to enjoy, those who do will be well rewarded!

Departing 22* & 29* December 2014 and 25 January, 17 February & 19 April 2015, the price is from £689 pp including flights (Gatwick), twin or double room for single use, breakfast and dinner daily, welcome drink & information meeting, complimentary harbour cruise, two Thalasso Pool sessions and the services of an accompanying Solos Tour Leader. A 14-night version of this trip, departing 22 December, costs £1,299 pp. (*Festive Christmas Eve or Special New Year’s Eve Dinners are also included for these departures). Full holiday details here.

Early Booking Offer: Book by 31 October 2014 and receive a complimentary upgrade to a deluxe garden view room (subject to availability).
