Saga supports crackdown on uninsured driving

4th October 2005 Print
Saga welcomes the change in law announced by the government, which will increase the chances of catching and punishing uninsured drivers. Uninsured drivers place an unfair burden on those over 50 as younger drivers are almost 30 times more likely to be convicted of uninsured driving.

Uninsured Driving and over 50s - the facts:

Only 3.5% of those convicted for driving without insurance are aged over 50.

36% of Driving Licences are held by people aged 50 and over.

The ABI estimates that uninsured motorists cost the average law abiding motorist £30 in additional insurance premiums

Were this cost split in proportion to the likelihood of their age group driving without insurance, the cost to motorists over 50 would be £2.08 and those under 50 would pay £45.70 extra on their motor insurance.

Paul Green, Saga, commented: "We welcome this change in the law, paying for uninsured drivers is a burden for all honest road users, but it is particularly unfair for drivers aged fifty and over. The cost of uninsured drivers ought to be fairly apportioned so that older drivers pay less.”
