Denby Transport go straight to Euro 5 with Volvo

Lincoln-based Denby Transport has specified Euro 5 compliant engines for all 14 of the Volvo FH-480 Globetrotter-cabbed 6x2 tractor units the company has ordered from Volvo Dealer Crossroads Truck and Bus.
All the vehicles feature Volvo’s SCR technology to achieve Euro 5 compliance and Volvo’s I-Shift automated transmission. Adblue top-ups are made using a combination of filling station services in the European countries where Denby Transport operates and an IBC at the Sadler Road, Lincoln depot.
Says Managing Director Peter Denby, “From the environmental perspective, the commitment the transport industry has made in reducing pollution is a good thing. Euro 5 offers environmental benefits and compliant vehicles are favoured by several countries, especially Germany and Austria. Opting for Euro 5 is an area where we can be at the forefront in reducing emissions.”
Optimising operational costs is extremely important to Denby Transport and the company worked closely with Volvo and Crossroads to refine the vehicle specification to suit the operation. “We received a lot of input from Volvo regarding engine power output, diff-ratios, tyres and coupling heights,” says Mr Denby. “We run without lead-up ramps and the fifth-wheels do not have a subframe. In order to lower the frontal area of the tractor unit and thus help manage fuel costs, we also run 295/70 tyres on axles 2 and 3 with 315/70’s on the front steer.”
Ninety-six per cent of Denby Transport’s operation is international; the company is a major user of Immingham and Teesport where the company’s large fleet of flat trailers carrying back-hoe loaders and agricultural tractors equipment is a familiar sight.
