Fleet operator’s Home Bargains expand their fleet with Volvo

The latest additions are two Euro 4 FM-400 tractor units, delivered this month from Thomas Hardie Commercials following the successful introduction of a batch Euro 4 vehicles fitted with SCR technology in December 2006.
As with the rest of Home Bargains’ Volvo fleet, the new 4x2 artics are equipped with I-shift automated transmission and Volvo Engine Brake (VEB), specified for maximum fuel economy and ease of driver use.
After transforming the majority of the company’s fleet to Volvo over a relatively short period of time, Transport Manager, Alan Beech explained, “Volvo’s commitment to driver safety and comfort were major influences in the purchasing decision.”
He added that, “Our drivers also like the performance of the vehicles and find that the I-shift gearbox makes their work environment a little easier.”
Home Bargains currently operate a mixed fleet of 30 tractor units, 9 rigids, and 50 trailers, with 75% of the tractor fleet now sporting the distinguished Volvo brand name.
Working in conjunction with Thomas Hardie Commercials, Home Bargains now have a single source repair and maintenance contract with Hardie’s depot in Liverpool.
Alan said, “Thomas Hardie Commercials provide us with the complete transport solution, in terms of sales, service and aftermarket,” adding that he found Thomas Hardie’s overall service, professional, reliable and cost effective.
As the third largest independent grocer in the UK, Home Bargains has future expansion plans, which include increasing the number of stores from 140 to 350 over the next 10 years. With company growth in mind, Home Bargains have a further delivery of two FM-400’s due this October.
