Ridgeons Volvo FL makes light of the streets of Cambridge – with Dynafleet

Ridgeons Timber and Builder’s Merchants Ltd are using a 12 tonne GVW Volvo FL-240 rigid equipped with a rear-mounted HIAB crane, to deliver construction materials to builders and sites in and around the city of Cambridge.

Supplied by Volvo Truck and Bus Centre East Anglia at Ely, the new FL was specified for its ability to manoeuvre in Cambridge’s notoriously congested and narrow city streets, where it is making three to five deliveries a day of building materials including sand, gravel, timber and brick packs.

The FL is the first truck in Ridgeons’ 130 strong, high-profile, main fleet to be equipped with Volvo’s Dynafleet ‘Perform and Locate’ telematics system - which the company is evaluating. Dynafleet is being used primarily for its ability to produce environmental reports as well as for its GPS tracking function with street level mapping.

According to Fleet Manager Ewan Hunter, the decision to equip the FL with Volvo’s Dynafleet was made in light of Ridgeons ongoing assessment of the firm’s carbon footprint. A second vehicle, to the same spec, is on order and due for delivery shortly.

The family-owned company is renowned in the construction industry in East Anglia for being able to supply orders in full from stock. Bulky materials, from timber to bricks and smaller items from plumbing fittings to tools all need to be delivered quickly and efficiently, the FL-240 makes light work of it.

Group Logistics Manager Alistair Brace reports that Ridgeons’ previous good experience with Volvo trucks was an important factor in deciding to place the current order for five trucks. “Our experience shows that Volvo offer a reliable, quality truck and good back-up from dealerships across East Anglia – many of which are close to our own depots.” The new FL is on a full Volvo Repair and Maintenance contract.
