Beware the ‘theftive’ season

16th December 2014 Print

In the run up to Christmas, the ABI is advising people to be careful of thieves looking for easy festive pickings.

Britons are planning to spend an average £350 each this year on Christmas presents so people should take precautions to look after the extra value in their homes. Homes are often left empty with shopping trips, Christmas parties and visiting family, leaving them vulnerable to preying thieves.

Insurers paid out almost £1 million every day last December to cover the cost of stolen goods, but being vigilant and taking care can help to prevent the distress a burglary can cause.

ABI tips for a safe and secure Christmas: - Try to avoid leaving presents sitting under the Christmas tree where they can be seen from outside by potential thieves. - Always securely lock all doors to your home even when popping to your neighbour’s for a quick drink. - Be aware of thieves and pickpockets who could take advantages of crowded Christmas shops and markets.

Do not leave Christmas presents visible in an unattended car.

Consider leaving a light or the TV /radio on when you are out, so burglars think that someone is in.

Be vigilant and keep an eye out for any unusual or suspicious behaviour in your neighbourhood.

Mark Shepherd, General Insurance Manager at the ABI, said: "This time of year can be a prime time for thieves to take advantage of people enjoying the festive season. In the lead up to Christmas it is all too easy to make a gift of your presents to thieves so take extra care and be vigilant among crowded Christmas shoppers. Insurance is there to reimburse you if the worst happens, but it won’t cover you if you take unnecessary risks that are in breach of your insurance policy.”
