Stampers Haulage steps up to I-Shift for new FH’s Family-owned and run R. I. Stamper Haulage Ltd., based at Kirkbride, near Wigton in Cumbria, has taken delivery of a brace of identically specified Volvo FH-480 6x2 pusher axle tractors to join their 15-strong fleet to be used for livestock and general haulage.

John Stamper, son of the founder and owner of the business said “We’ve always had Volvo’s in the fleet dating back to an F86 in 1978. The new FH’s are very good on fuel which will only get better and as the drivers get used to them. Other fleets round here have taken trucks with I-Shifts and they say they’re very good. So I thought it would be a good move to fit these with I-Shift as well.”

“The local Dealer has been very good,” John Stamper continued,” I was very impressed by how they took all the drivers out and showed them how to get the best out of the trucks. They were very attentive, they tried their hardest and the price was right. We decided to go for Volvo for the reliability. But they’re very good for manoeuvring and good for getting into the farms.”

Supplied by Volvo Truck and Bus North located at nearby Carlisle, both trucks are maintained on Volvo R & M contracts and work on livestock haulage 90% of the time. John said, “We want the new wagons on the livestock run’s for reliability.”

Trunking from Stirling down to Cornwall, Stampers are contracted to abattoirs including Dunbia and Cleveland Meats. The rest of the time, they work for a local saw mill hauling rough sawn timber on the outbound run’s and returning with fertilizer on the back loads. Expected to cover up to 160,000 kms per year, the trucks both feature the long established and distinctive company livery.
