Length does matter for Nusteel Structures

Nusteels new Volvo FH-440 STGO CAT 2 rig delivering an M40 motorway gantry. Nusteel Structures, based in Hythe, Kent, has been in the business of designing, manufacturing and transporting steel bridge sections and gantries for 54 years.

Jason Messenger, Technical Director for Nusteel said, “As part of our continuing aim to increase Nusteel’s capability, we have added a second new Volvo tractor unit to the fleet. This truck will support the largest ever motorway gantry contract in the UK, which will see 77 gantries replaced on the motorways around Birmingham as part of the hard shoulder running programme. We specified Volvo for their inherent reliability and suitability for the specialist jobs we do.”

The accompanying photographs show one of their Volvo FH-440 artics on the M40 as it recently delivered an overhead ‘portal’ type motorway gantry.

The gantries are typically transported in a single piece, using an extendable trailer which can accommodate loads ranging from 16 to 32 metres in load length.

All Nusteel’s Volvo trucks were supplied by Volvo Dealer, MC Truck and Bus of Maidstone.

The STGO CAT 2 outfit comprises a new Broshuis extendable tri-axle trailer which is ideal for delivering motorway gantries (both portal and cantilever type), passenger links and covered walkways.

Operating at a gross weight of 80 tonnes, the Nusteel loads are self escorted by the company’s own vehicles.
