Heavyweight comfort with Volvo FH16 for Allsop

5th February 2009 Print
Volvo FH16-660 Derbyshire plant hire and earth-moving operator Allsop Plant and Haulage has taken delivery of a new Volvo FH16-660, plated for operation at 150 tonnes. The 6x4 tractor unit will join the rest of the Smalley-based company’s Volvo-heavy fleet, moving heavy plant across the UK and beyond.

The FH16’s impressive power-to-weight ratio and driver comfort were key factors in the decision in maintaining Allsop’s relationship with Volvo. “We’ve been running Volvo’s since 1995, when we got an FH16-520,” recalls owner David Allsop. “That suited us down to the ground, especially in terms of power-to-weight ratio. We’ve replaced that truck with one other FH16 before this one; the power, build quality and driver comfort are all excellent.” The company also counts Volvo FL’s and FH12’s among its 6-strong fleet.

The truck’s Globetrotter XL cab is highly specified with a refrigerator, microwave and full leather upholstery. “The driver’s very impressed with it,” David remarks. “The I-shift gearbox also adds to the driving experience while the Voith retarder makes light work of downhill gradients.” The truck has already hauled loads of up to 100 tonnes on its Nooteboom 4 + 1 axle trailer.

Repair and maintenance will be handled by supplying dealer Hartshorne Motor Services at Alfreton on a two-year contract. “We have a good relationship with them on both the sales and service sides,” says David. “They’re friendly people and they get the job done!”
