Middle lane drivers are inconsiderate say middle lane drivers

Those who complain about others on the road should look in the mirror at their own driving behaviour.

A new report into British driving behaviours has found that motorway drivers are quick to criticise actions in others that they demonstrate themselves. This bizarre finding comes from new research by LV= General Insurance which explored the attitudes of drivers towards others on the motorway.

The research shows that our favourite place to drive is in the middle lane with nearly half (46 per cent) of motorway drivers saying that the middle lane is the one they use the most. The report shows that drivers have firm stereotypes for those who remain in the inside, middle and outside lanes. And while the top grumbles involve holding up traffic and driving too slowly, the people who complained about this type of behaviour also admitted to doing it themselves!

John O’Roarke, Managing Director, LV= General Insurance said: “There is clearly a gap between perception and reality when it comes to motorway driving. It seems the vast majority of people think their driving skills are fine and everyone else is the problem – especially middle-lane drivers who are the most loathed. If British motorists became more realistic and tolerant, the roads may be a safer place to drive. Our research is a wake up call to British motorists to reflect upon their own driving behaviour.”

Further still, the research found a huge 95 per cent of drivers claim to indicate regularly on the motorway when changing lane, 81 per cent of which say they always indicate. Women claim to indicate more than men (86 per cent and 76 per cent respectively).

Commenting on the number of drivers who claim to indicate regularly, John O’Roarke continued: “From common experience alone, this is clearly an optimistic perception of reality.”
