Live independently longer in later life

With people in Worcester predicted to live longer, retirees are being encouraged to look to the future and think about their housing options sooner rather than later.

A study by researchers from Imperial College London, published in the Lancet, predicts an improvement in life expectancy rates over and above official data from the Office of National Statistics.

The latest figures suggest that by 2030 women in Worcester will live to 88.4 years, compared with a national average of 87.6 years; while men in the area are predicted to live to around the national average of just over 85 years.

Aspen Retirement, the company behind luxury apartments at Eastbank Court in Worcester, says people should think about planning a move in their 60s and 70s rather than wait too long.

Liz Herring, sales and marketing manager for Aspen, says: “As people live longer it’s increasingly important that they plan for their long term future by thinking about where they want to live in later years. All too often they leave it until they have to move, perhaps because of health or mobility issues, rather than because they want to. We encourage people to choose a home they can enjoy now, but will still suit them in 10 years, and to think about how their needs may change over time.

“Moving to somewhere like Eastbank Court, where there’s the option of adding extra support at a later date, could enable them to live independently in their own home for longer and potentially mean that they don’t need to move to a costly residential care home further down the line.

“And they can start enjoying some great hotel-style amenities from day one, including a licensed restaurant and bar.”

Current availability at Eastbank Court includes a choice of one and two-bedroom, generously proportioned apartments priced from £184,950.

Kitchens are well-sized and include a washer/dryer rather than having to use a communal laundry, while spacious bathrooms have a bath and walk-in shower.

The on-site licensed restaurant serves nutritious hot meals, enabling homeowners to tuck into a hearty lunch without having to bother with washing up.

There’s also a communal lounge where homeowners can meet; conservatory style lounge known as the garden room; an activities room where they can play games; plus a piano room; library and even a hair salon.

For added peace of mind, there’s a manager on call around the clock.

Ninety minutes of domestic help a week is included in a service charge, which also covers buildings insurance, window cleaning and maintaining the gardens and communal areas.

Additional care such as help getting up, bathing or going to bed can be arranged when and if it’s required.

Located on Eastbank Drive, Northwick, Eastbank Court is ideally placed in a quiet residential area of Worcester. There’s a post office, shop and chemist close by; while the city centre is easily accessible by bus.
