Construction work has begun on a new housing development in Newbury.

Bloor Homes was granted planning permission to build 40 new homes on the site of the Greenacre Health & Fitness Club on Greenham Road in December last year.

Demolition work on the leisure centre, which closed in July, got underway in October and was completed in November.

A brand new sports complex, built to replace the old facility, and operated by David Lloyd Leisure, opened off Monks Lane in December.

As part of the development, Bloor contributed £500,000 towards the cost of acquiring the land for the new facility.

The developer has also made payments of more than £275,000 towards local services through a Section 106 agreement with West Berkshire Council.

Contributions included £160,205.97 for education, £71,106.62 for open space and recreational facilities, £27,308.84 for adult social care, £11,182.73 for West Berkshire libraries, and £7,812.27 for the local GP practice.

Construction work has now commenced on the first plots at the development, which are due to be completed in the spring. There will be a mix of two, three and four-bedroom homes for sale.

John Lusty, Regional Managing Director at Bloor Homes Southern, said: “As well as helping to provide new and improved leisure facilities for the area, our Greenham Gardens development will deliver a range of prestige three and four bedroom homes in an attractive and sustainable location just over a mile from Newbury town centre.

“The development has been carefully designed to reflect the character of the area, and will feature a variety of house types as well as an attractive tree-lined entrance into the site from Greenham Road.

“Following the demolition of the old fitness club, we have now commenced building work on the site and look forward to releasing the first homes for sale in the spring.”

Meanwhile construction work is also progressing at Bloor Homes’ Harwood Place development five miles down the road in Woolton Hill.

A total of 49 homes are being built on land off Tile Barn Row where the first residents moved in last month.
