3 renovation tips for selling your home

9th July 2021 Print

Selling your home can be a difficult process, and often it requires a hefty dose of TLC to get your property into tip-top condition for the market.

But if you’re thinking of selling your home, the chances are your renovation process is well underway, with those long-procrastinated DIY jobs and much-needed fixes finally getting sorted.

Whilst these improvements are vital to your house sale, remember that the pre-sale renovation process is not just about increasing the value of your home. If it’s going to sell, you’ll also have to increase its appeal to buyers to make sure your home makes a good impression – these three tips will help you do just that.

1. Make space!

Clearing out your clutter is the first step to any house moving journey.

As well as giving your property a much-needed sprucing, dispensing of your excess junk will help you on your way to your new home.

However, when it comes to selling, a clutter clear-out will also help keep your home tidy for viewings, and make it appear more spacious – a major selling point for buyers (see below!).

Remember too, when it comes to personal possessions – these touches aren’t a bad thing, and can add character to your home. But if possible, keep them to a minimum. After all, buyers want to picture your home as their own, and if your home is very obviously well-loved and well-lived in, with family photographs at every turn, this can alienate their vision.

2. It’s bigger on the inside

Space is a huge priority for many buyers. But if it’s the one thing your home is lacking, fear not – there are plenty of tricks you can use to boost the dimensions of every room, even if you’re not exactly working with a TARDIS.

Make the most of natural lighting and swap out your curtains for blinds where possible. If you’re re-painting, pastels and neutrals will create a light and airy feel. If in doubt, get your hands on a few Dulux tester pots and see the difference a gentle splash of colour can make.

It’s also a well-known fact that mirrors can make any room look noticeably bigger, so invest in a few to strategically place around your home.

3. The open door…

How often do you think about the doors of your home? Probably not very often, we’ll wager.

But brand new doors can make a world of difference to your home. A new front door will give it that all-important curb appeal, while internal doors from the likes of Oakwood Doors can instantly glam up any room in the house.

Doors can also be an opportunity for some light décor around the house too, such as a towel rail or curtain. These additions are anonymous enough to blend in to the rest of your interior design whilst showcasing the versatility of your home.

Follow these three tips to transform your well-loved abode into the perfect show home.
