5 tips you need to keep in mind when travelling to India

9th August 2021 Print

If you compare India to other countries, it can get very busy, congested, and overwhelming. Travelling to India is a dream that many have, but they are afraid of culture shock. In this article, I am going to highlight some of the best tips you can use when you are in India to make your trip a success.

Do Proper Research Beforehand

The very first and the most important thing that you need to do before you leave for India is to read a few blogs and articles about what it is like living in India. If you have never been to India before, you are going to be surprised by lots of things as it is a totally different place compared to the rest of the world.

Doing research is going to help you avoid lots of scams and make things easier for you once you set foot in the country. You might come across a few horror stories while you are reading blogs online, but if you know where to go and how to keep yourself safe, you don’t have anything to worry about.

Don’t Try to Visit Too Many Places

A huge mistake that a lot of people make is that they make things harder for themselves by trying to fit a lot of places in a small tour. India is a very large country with lots of places to visit. If you try to visit all of them, not only is it going to take a lot of time but also cost you a lot of money.

Instead of being in a hurry and visiting the whole country, you should focus on a few destinations to explore in-depth. You will have a better time enjoying yourself with the locals, and you can easily spend your time without feeling fatigued or being tired.

Keep Your Money Safe

Just like when you are visiting any other country, there are lots of things that you need to be aware of when visiting India. One of those things is pickpockets and scammers. While it might not be just to say that everyone tries to scam you, but you still have to keep your belongings safe and keep an active mind when you are on the streets.

Moreover, when you are exchanging money with someone or getting the change back after purchasing something, you should count it carefully. Instead of using a local service, you can have a relative or a friend send money to India through an international money exchange service such as Western Union so that everything goes smoothly.

Prepare for a Culture Shock

If it is your first time travelling to India, prepare yourself for an adventure of a lifetime as life has a different meaning in the country. It doesn’t matter where you go or what time it is; you are always going to find a bunch of people walking in the streets; mingling with each other.

The best way to have fun in India is to accept the country like it is and leave all your expectations at home. You are going to find a wild mix of people, which can’t be explained in words and can only be experienced with your own eyes.

Learn How to Bargain

One of the habits that I had to develop when I was visiting India was bargaining. Especially if you are buying something off the streets, you should never trust the vendor and always try to bring the price down as much as you can.

Local Indians usually charge foreigners more as they don’t know how to bargain or don’t care. So, bargaining is a skill that you need to build and work on so that you don’t pay more than what you have to for everyday items.
