4 reasons to consider the new Ford Mustang Mach-E
The world is changing. The macho action heroes of the 1980s have given way to more complex, more human characters on the silver screen. Big sports news outlets, once singularly focused on players, are devoting more air time to issues of justice and equity. And the car world is going electric.
The Ford Mustang might be the last car you would expect to see go electric. Its reputation as a muscle-bound, engine-roaring hulk of the highway remains an enduring part of its icon status. And although it transformed several times throughout its near-60-year history, none of its transformations are quite as momentous as the Mach-E.
In this article, let’s take a first look at the Ford Mustang Mach-E – the 2021 update of an American classic. Thankfully, the Mach-E exceeds expectations. Here are four reasons to consider Ford’s brand-new Mustang offering.
It’s Electric
The first, most noticeable change to the Mustang formula is that it’s electric. Electric vehicles have come a long way in the last couple of decades, and the Mach-E definitely bears the mark of all that progress. It’s more Tesla than Chevy Bolt, retaining its iconic status as a muscle car through high horsepower (480hp on the GT) and a stellar 0-60mph (3.8 seconds).
The most significant difference between luxury brands like Tesla and the Ford Mach-E is price. The new Mach-E rolls in (quietly) at a base price of just over $50,000. That’s roughly half the price of a Model S.
It’s Great for Families
"Mustang" and "family-friendly" are not two things you're used to hearing together. But, as this article makes clear, the Mach-E is not your average Mustang.
It’s an SUV with lots of room in the back for kids, camping gear, sports equipment and luggage. Further, the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E nabbed IIHS’s top safety pick thanks to its outstanding crash test rating and ample safety features. And as mentioned above, the price is also family-friendly, and the all-electric engine saves families money on rising gas prices.
The Same Sleek Package
For those concerned that an all-electric SUV doesn't bear much resemblance to the Mustang they know and love, don't worry. Yes, the Mustang has changed. Yes, it sounds different. But the sleek look and wild spirit of the original are still fully intact here.
The sloping front and rear track are reminiscent of the old pony car, albeit bulked up to the size of a crossover. And several commentators have noted that the Mach-E is the best-looking car in the new crop of 2021 electrics.
The Reviews Are In
Don’t take this reviewer’s word for it – there are several recent reviews touting the merits of the Mach-E. Car and Driver say the Mach-E “lives up to the hype,” noting its attractive exterior, impressive power and fair price. And Consumer Reports was similarly effusive in its July review of the new release.
The world may be changing, but some things don’t change. The Mustang is still the fierce, powerful and forward-thinking vehicle that car-lovers love. It has simply gone through a few updates to make it more efficient and family-friendly.
