Goodwood Junior Festival of Speed

Roary the Racing Car, from the eponymous new pre-school television series, will interact with younger visitors throughout the weekend in the Junior Festival of Speed area, joined by his mechanic sidekick Big Chris. Children and their parents will be able to meet a life-size Roary and have their photographs taken with him and Big Chris. There will also be Roary-based activities for children to try.
Brainchild of Keith Chapman, originator of ‘Bob the Builder’, Roary the Racing Car is narrated by the legendary Sir Stirling Moss (who is also attending the Festival) with Peter Kay providing the voice of mechanic Big Chris.
This high-octane series is set on a fictitious race track known as Silver Hatch and features the thrilling adventures of the cheeky little red single-seater and his racing chums, fuelling a mixture of fun, emotion, mishaps and mayhem. Featuring a cutting edge mix of stop frame animation and CGI to convey a real sense of speed, the show is currently airing on Channel Five’s Milkshake! and will start on Nick Jr on 2 June.
Joining Roary in the Junior Festival of Speed area – which is designed specifically to appeal to kids and families – will be a cluster of life-size fully working cars from the popular Wacky Races cartoon series. The latest addition to Goodwood’s Wacky fleet this year is the striking Buzzwagon, which cuts a dash with its circular saw blades in place of wheels. It will be driven by Rufus Ruffcut and Sawtooth.
The Buzzwagon is the tenth full-size Wacky Racer built for Goodwood by local specialists Modeltech, leaving only one more to complete the set. It will parade up the hillclimb throughout the weekend along with Penelope Pitstop’s Compact Pussycat; Peter Perfect’s Turbo Terrific; Dastardly & Muttley’s Mean Machine; the Gruesome Twosome’s Creepy Coupe; Professor Pat Pending’s Convert-A-Car; the Slag Brothers’ Boulder Mobile; the Army Surplus Special of Sargeant Blast and Private Meekley; the Crimson Haybaler driven by the Red Max; and the Arkansas Chugabug with Luke and Blubber Bear.
In addition to the Wacky Races cars and characters, the Junior Festival of Speed features a range of activities for younger children. Situated close to the cricket pitch at the south side of the event, below are some of the events and activities that the Junior Festival of Speed incorporates within its dedicated area:
Southampton Scrap Store – The Southampton Scrappers are running workshops all day for children to make objects out of scrap materials kindly donated by local companies and offices.
Greenpower – Greenpower organises a unique series of electric car projects for schools, which challenge students aged nine to eighteen to get stuck in to engineering.
Team Extreme – Back by popular demand, Team Extreme will put on their hugely impressive show of boarding skills for all three days of the Festival. This spectacular show is guaranteed to take your breath away.
MAD – the Mountain bike Aerial Display team will be giving performances each day to showcase their skills. See them perform death-defying leaps, jumps, hops and balancing skills, using just their mountain bikes.

Take part in a brand new feature for 2007 in the Junior Area. Pit your skills and test your stamina on this fantastic interactive assault course featuring scramble net challenge, eight-metre climbing tower, eight-metre abseil wall, ¼ scale off-road vehicles and a mountain bike assault course!
RareKind – will be giving a Toyota HiAce a graffiti make-over, as well as painting a large scale mural and running daily workshops for young people to win the chance to help paint the mural wall!
