The UK motor industry in your pocket

22nd May 2007 Print
Packed full of its usual informative data such as vehicle registration and production volumes, the SMMT pocket-sized guide to facts and figures for the UK automotive sector, Motor Industry Facts – 2007, is published today (22 May 2007).

With a new layout, this year's edition opens with sections highlighting motor industry performance, both in investment and environmental terms.

'Motor Industry Facts - 2007 contains a wealth of useful information on the UK automotive industry,' said SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan. 'As well as containing the fundamental bedrock of production and registration data, this latest edition gives details on how committed and serious the industry is at investing in the future – both in manufacturing and environmental performance.'

SMMT was the first of any industry to produce an annual sustainability report. Now in its eighth year, the report is a public record of progress across three goals: economic progress, environmental performance and social responsibility. Key industry performance aspects are summarised within the new booklet.

Throughout the booklet, there are also a number of 'Did you know?' facts, such as:

For every vehicle produced, UK vehicle makers have cut energy use, waste and CO 2 emissions by half in four years.

More than 65 per cent of UK commercial vehicle production in 2006 was exported.

The UK is host to eight volume car manufacturers and more specialist car makers than any other European country.

Vehicle crime in the UK has dropped by 51 per cent since 1997.
