UK travel links to be pushed to limit over May Bank Holiday

Trafficlink, the UK’s leading provider of real-time traffic and travel information, is warning motorists that the coming bank holiday will see the worst travel congestion this year.

“Traditionally the second bank holiday of May has been a nightmare for travellers as it coincides with the half term break and this year will be no exception. This year also sees a number of events adding to the congestion including the Football Championship playoffs over the weekend and racing at Chepstow,” says Alan Miller, Director of Operations, Trafficlink.

“We are predicting chaos on all major roads out of the cities as motorists head for the UK’s coastal resorts. In particular there will be disruption on the M1 and M25 due to roadworks. In addition suspected work on some of the country’s major rail links means that train travellers won’t escape the problems – both GNER and Virgin services will be experiencing difficulties. We are advising people to plan their journeys carefully and to listen to the travel updates on their local radio stations before setting off.”

Trafficlink is placing extra staff on duty around the clock at its seven call centres to meet extra demand for its real-time traffic and travel updates from its customers. Trafficlink supplies data to commercial and BBC radio stations across the country, in addition to businesses, TV stations and the Government.

Trafficlink’s warning comes just days after The UK Department for Transport published traffic data for the first quarter of 2007. The figures showed that car traffic was up 1% and although motorway traffic was virtually unchanged, rural A and minor roads carried 2% more traffic than in 2006.
