RMIF provides anti-smoking signage
Businesses in England will be breaking the law if they let customers or staff smoke on their premises after the smoking ban comes into force on 1 July 2007, so the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMIF) has produced a new “NO SMOKING” sign to help its members enforce the ban.Almost all enclosed public places and workplaces in England will become smoke-free after 1 July. Businesses which fail to prevent smoking on their premises and fail to display non-smoking signs face substantial fines. The system will be policed by local councils.
The new sign will enable businesses to comply with the new rules.
Alec Murray, RMIF non executive chairman, commented: ‘Retail motor sector businesses need to make sure that it is clear to customers that they cannot smoke on their premises. The new RMIF “NO SMOKING” sign will alert them to this.’
Employees will also be prevented from smoking on the premises. The new laws will apply to workplaces which are either enclosed or “substantially enclosed”, so the smoking room will be banned. Work vehicles used by more than one person will also have to be smoke free.
