British Gas strikes back on dual fuel and gas prices

16th February 2007 Print
Commenting on British Gas’ second wave of price cuts in seven days, Paul Schofield, head of utilities at moneysupermarket.com, said:

“Powergen made tactical price cuts yesterday to become cheapest in certain key regions including London, the North West and Scotland, but already British Gas has struck back with a move that will make its Click Energy 2 product the cheapest nationwide. This dual fuel offering is the first on average across all regions to drop below £800, standing at £784 for the average customer, the cheapest of the big six energy suppliers.

“This rapid reaction suggests the largest supplier in the energy market, with over ten million customers, is intent to remain the cheapest in all regions, and will continue to undercut its competitors to reclaim some of the market share lost in recent years. It sends a strong signal both to other suppliers and to UK households that after months of overpriced stagnation the energy market is finally becoming competitive once again.”

moneysupermarket.com is making a stand to help these people ditch their expensive power companies and get the cheapest energy deal by offering £30 cash-back to all customers swapping to a dual fuel tariff through its service. Those not going for a dual fuel tariff but changing a provider or tariff will benefit from a single £17.50 payment.
