moneysupermarket.com: Powergen's price cuts

27th February 2007 Print
Commenting on Powergen’s price cuts announced today, Paul Schofield, head of utilities at price comparison website moneysupermarket.com said:

“This is much more like it from Powergen. No more tinkering around with discount offers for different regions, instead solid and substantial price cuts for gas, electricity and dual fuel customers. These cuts make it the cheapest for the standard tariff on dual fuel at £832, and second cheapest for online dual fuel at £783. Powergen is in fact the cheapest in 10 out of the 14 regions for its online deal, in part a result of the regional price battle it attempted to spark earlier this month. But as we saw from Centrica’s announcement on profits last week, the major suppliers still have some way to go to pass on the full wholesale energy price falls we’ve seen since last summer to their customers.

“From the frustrating winter stare-off between suppliers to see which would blink first, we’ve moved to an almost daily limbo dance on price between the big providers. Watch this space - British Gas is certain to make another move in response to these cuts, but it may wait for Scottish and Southern Energy’s announcement first. The fascinating unknown is just how low each provider is prepared to go, but in the meantime this tactical price war can only benefit the switched-on energy shopper.”

moneysupermarket.com is making a stand to help these people ditch their expensive power companies and get the cheapest energy deal by offering £30 cash-back to all customers swapping to a dual fuel tariff through its service. Those not going for a dual fuel tariff but changing a provider or tariff will benefit from a single £17.50 payment.
