EDF Energy moves into new Territories

1st March 2007 Print
EDF Energy is expanding its online tariff to cover a further 9 electricity regions.

The move means that customers in 10 out of the 14 electricity regions in the UK will now be able to sign up to its online tariff – previously only available to those in the Southern region.

This tariff is available to new customers taking both gas and electricity with EDF Energy, but can only be applied for through ‘broker sites’ – the online switching and comparison services where consumers can compare different energy deals.

Geoff Slaughter, Energy Product Manager at uSwitch.com, comments on the move: “The proof of a pudding is in the eating - we said that suppliers are sending out a clear message to consumers that online is the way to go and EDF Energy’s move today confirms this.

“Whereas a standard dual fuel customer with EDF Energy could expect to pay £929 per year, somebody signing up to the new online tariff with the same company will be paying £819. This is mirrored across the industry with online customers paying on average £69 less than those on Standard tariffs. Consumers can put extra pounds back in their pockets so should be looking at these deals carefully to see if it’s the right move for them.

“The fact that EDF Energy is only making these new tariffs available to consumers through sites such as ours is testament to the impact that switching and comparison services have had within the industry. Switching numbers are up - there were 4 million switchers last year - forcing suppliers to offer consumers better value in terms of price and service. There is no room for complacency any more. The more people switch, the more the suppliers will need to work to attract and retain their customers and so the better the deals they will have to offer.

“It is however cold comfort to customers waiting for EDF Energy to lower its standard prices - there still hasn’t been any news on price cuts yet – so we would urge the company to make this its priority.”

EDF Energy’s online tariff will now be available in East Midlands, Eastern, Manweb, Midlands, Northern, Norweb, Scottish Hydro, Scottish Power, Southern and Yorkshire regions.
