moneysupermarket.com: EDF cutting its gas prices

30th April 2007 Print
Commenting on EDF’s decision to cut gas prices by 10.2 per cent, Paul Schofield, head of utilities at price comparison website moneysupermarket.com, said: “This is a case of too little and far too late. By delaying its gas price cut until June 15, ‘standard’ dual fuel EDF customers have lost out by £18.50 each, which equates to millions of pounds.

“Scottish & Southern was the first of the ‘Big Six’ to introduce a price cut back on March 1, 2007, with British Gas and Powergen also doing so that month.

“With most of EDF's 5.5 million customers being on electricity only, it is very disappointing there has been no reduction to its electricity prices. Finally, after sitting tight while its competitors have made several tactical price cuts, EDF has shown its teeth but only with a gas price cut of 10.2 per cent.

“Despite this cut, EDF will still have the most expensive ‘Online’ tariff and the second most expensive ‘Standard’ gas tariff.

“At least EDF’s announcement will apply further pressure to Scottish Power, which remains the only provider not to announce price cuts since wholesale prices fell last year.”
