Best energy providers for each region revealed

4th June 2007 Print
With the latest price cuts coming into effect next week, Britons are being urged to check they are on the best gas and electricity tariffs for their region.

EDF and Scottish Power have been the last of the big six providers to move, with their cheaper tariffs coming into effect on 15 June.

Analysis from moneysupermarket.com reveals the cheapest tariffs will be in the east of England for dual fuel, the East Midlands for electricity and southern Scotland for gas.

British Gas is the cheapest dual fuel provider in nine of the 14 regions. Those in the east of England can pay £733 a year on a dual fuel tariff based on average energy consumption, although those on the same tariff in the Midlands would pay £766.

EDF is the cheapest electricity provider in 10 of the regions, with British Gas best for the remaining four. Those in the East Midlands have the cheapest electricity of £232 a year compared to £300 a year in South Wales.

For gas only, Scottish Power is the cheapest provider in 11 regions.

Paul Schofield, head of utilities at moneysupermarket.com, said: “With the full effect of price cuts in sight, it is time for customers to make sure they don’t lose out. Our research shows which energy providers offer the best deal in each region, enabling people to make an informed decision. Customers, who have suffered high energy prices for too long, will finally see some savings on their hard earned cash.

“It is encouraging to see a smaller provider, such as Utilita, appearing so prominently as the cheapest provider of dual fuel in five regions. This should certainly keep the big six on their toes and could even spark another flurry of price cuts.”
