Commenting on Iberdrola and Scottish Power's financial results, Scott Byrom, utilities expert at price comparison site moneysupermarket.com, said: "Scottish Power is now part of the world's fourth largest electricity company. It is investing heavily in customer service and with this level of financial muscle, it should also be stepping up with a market-leading tariff to steal the march on British Gas, Scottish & Southern and npower in their price war.

"Its announcement that it will focus more on the environment is welcome, considering it currently emits 0.63 kilograms of CO2 per kilowatt hour - more than any of its rivals."
