Consumers are a step closer to accurate energy bills

1st May 2008 Print
The National Consumer Council (NCC) welcomes the progress towards a roll-out of smart meters in all UK homes marked by proposed amendments to the Energy Bill.

They will allow government to take action on smart metering once the necessary impact assessments and consultations are completed.

Commenting on the amendments, Cassie Higgs, Senior Policy Advocate at the National Consumer Council, says
"Smart meters give consumers clear information and greater control over their energy use, helping us all to consumer energy more responsibly.

"And by providing suppliers with accurate energy readings, they would make estimated bills, which are a major consumer gripe, a thing of the past".

A final decision is expected in six months' time.
