Commenting on ScottishPower cutting gas and electricity prices, Scott Byrom, utilities manager at moneysupermarket.com, said: "This latest move from ScottishPower leaves npower as the only one of the ‘Big Six' yet to announce a price cut this year. From the end of March, ScottishPower's standard customers will benefit from an average cut of 7.5 per cent to gas, and three per cent to electricity - meaning the average bill for customers paying by monthly direct debit now stands at £1156. ScottishPower is the second provider to have made cuts to both gas and electricity in 20091.

"Yet again, this price cut falls short of British Gas' WebSaver 2 tariff which retains its position as the cheapest on the market at £1,054 per year for a medium user, just over £100 cheaper than ScottishPower's latest offering.

"Those who have never changed their energy provider, or who are on a standard tariff, should shop around for a better deal now. Paying by monthly direct debit brings more competitive rates than settling bills by quarterly cash or cheque.

"Bill payers across the country will now be awaiting the final move from npower which, having seen how small its rivals' reductions have been, has a big opportunity to win a swathe of new customers if it cuts prices aggressively."
