16th March 2009 Print
Commenting on npower cutting electricity prices, Scott Byrom, utilities manager at moneysupermarket.com, said: "Over seven weeks after the initial announcement from British Gas, npower has made its move as the final of the UK's ‘Big Six' energy giants to cut prices this year - a 7.2 per cent cut to the cost of its electricity effective 31 March 2009. npower's 6.8 million customers will no doubt be disappointed to see no change to gas prices. Those on a standard tariff will benefit from just over £35 being knocked off their bills - down to £1,245 a year.

"This cut from npower means on average British bill payers have seen a 2.3 per cent decrease to the cost of their gas, and a 4.6 per cent cut to electricity so far this year - cold comfort for those still struggling to pay their bills for energy used during the winter months.

"For any Brits waiting for a full round of cuts before swapping supplier, now will be the time to pounce on the best deal available to them. Savvy energy users will quickly spot the WebSaver 2 tariff from British Gas retains its position as the cheapest offering on the market at £1,054 per year for a medium user.

"Those who have never changed their energy provider, or who are on a standard tariff, should shop around for a better deal now. Paying by monthly direct debit brings more competitive rates than settling bills by quarterly cash or cheque."
