moneysupermarket.com: British Gas cuts electricity prices

7th May 2009 Print
Commenting on British Gas cutting electricity prices by 10 per cent and the launch of WebSaver 3, Scott Byrom, utilities manager at moneysupermarket.com said: "As expected, British Gas has made a second price cut this year - reducing the cost of electricity by 10 per cent for its 4.5 million standard customers, effective immediately. This is great news for customers, making up for the provider only cutting gas prices in the first round this year (10 per cent, effective 19 February 2009). Households with an average consumption can expect to see a drop of £46 to their annual bill, with standard prices falling to £1,199.

"British Gas also launches WebSaver 3 today, offering customers a minimum six per cent discount on standard prices until August next year - which may appeal to Brits looking for security against the possibility of future price rises.

"These moves enable British Gas to offer both existing and new customers an even better deal on their energy prices, warmly welcomed after the sharp increases in prices last year (47 per cent for gas and 28 per cent for electricity). Customers will now find there are even more savings to be had, prompting the 48 per cent of Brits who have never swapped supplier to scour the market for a better deal. British Gas' dual fuel prices now stands at £1,018 on the WebSaver 3 tariff in comparison to an average of £1,072 across the other main providers, five per cent cheaper.

"Better still is the prospect for the other millions of British bill payers - this latest move may spark further reductions from the rest of the ‘Big Six'. Now is a crucial time to shop around and look to see what savings can be made on your energy deals."
